Columns

column banner picture

Columns  can add stately grandeur to a building as well as a sense of space.  A Column  is a load bearing cylindrical structure,  normally with a gentle taper (entasis) towards the top.  In classical architecture, it is composed of base, shaft and capital.

Pilaster – a flat, rectangular classical column fixed against a wall or used to frame a doorway, wall area fireplace, etc Columns and pilasters may be smooth or fluted (containing grooves along their length)
